Gorilla trekking day begins early, often before sunrise. Most lodges offer early breakfast because trekkers must arrive at the park headquarters by 7:00 AM for mandatory briefing. This morning briefing is the heart of gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda. Rangers explain trekking rules, gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, and forest etiquette. You’re assigned a gorilla family based on preferences and fitness level. Trackers communicating via radio give updates on where the gorillas nested the previous night.
By around 8:00 AM, you begin hiking with guides, rangers, and porters. The trek takes you through thick forest, muddy paths, valleys, and hills. Depending on gorilla movement, you may trek for one hour or several. Along the way, guides point out plants, wildlife, and fresh gorilla traces like dung or footprints.
Once the gorilla family is located, you spend exactly one hour with them. This is the emotional highlight of gorilla safaris in Uganda—watching gorilla interactions, listening to chest beats, photographing infants, or observing a silverback in quiet authority. Rangers ensure safety and comfort at all times.
After your hour, you trek back to the headquarters. The return hike may be shorter or longer depending on the terrain. By early afternoon, most trekkers return to the briefing point where they receive certificates of achievement. The day ends with a rewarding sense of accomplishment, reflection, and deep appreciation for these magnificent primates.
