Best Months for Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla
While Bwindi remains the primary destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a unique and quieter alternative, often hosting the migratory Nyakagezi gorilla family. Choosing the right month for your adventure in Mgahinga, which sits at even higher altitudes than Bwindi, is paramount. The park’s rugged volcanic terrain is heavily influenced by distinct tropical rain patterns; therefore, optimal timing significantly affects trail conditions and visibility.
The Best Time to Trek: Dry Seasons
The consensus for the best months for trekking in Mgahinga falls within the two primary dry seasons. During these windows, the probability of a clear and comfortable hike is highest.
- June to August: This period is generally considered the peak dry season. Because rainfall is lower, the challenging trails on the Virunga Volcanoes are drier and easier to navigate. Additionally, visibility is typically excellent, which is crucial for photography.
- January and February: The shorter dry season is also an excellent choice. While temperatures can be slightly higher, the trails remain relatively firm. Notably, fewer crowds are encountered compared to the mid-year peak, offering a more tranquil experience.
Challenges of the Rainy Seasons
Conversely, the two major rainy seasons—March to May and September to November—present a more formidable challenge. During these periods, the trails become extremely muddy and difficult to traverse. Permit Costs and the Nyakagezi Group
As of 2026, gorilla permits for Mgahinga are priced at $800 USD for foreign non-residents. This permit provides access to the Nyakagezi family, the park’s only habituated group. Unlike earlier years when they frequently migrated to Rwanda or the DRC, this family has been permanently settled in Mgahinga since 2012. Because only eight permits are issued per day for this park, early booking is strongly advised, especially for the preferred dry months.
