The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the most fascinating groups to visit during any Uganda safari. This family is widely known for its unique structure and the peaceful coexistence of multiple silverbacks—a trait that sets them apart from the typical single-leader hierarchy of most mountain gorilla families. Because their home range is relatively compact, sightings are highly predictable, making Mgahinga a preferred destination for travelers who value reliable wildlife encounters.
A Rare Multi-Silverback Dynamic
The Nyakagezi family is currently composed of 9 members, including an extraordinary four silverbacks. While most dominant silverbacks banish rivals to maintain control, the Nyakagezi group is defined by its stability. Mark remains the dominant silverback, having succeeded his father, Bugingo. Remarkably, Bugingo—who is over 54 years old—continues to live peacefully within the group as a respected “Mzee” (elder).
Furthermore, the presence of silverbacks Mathew and Mafia adds to the group’s protective and social depth. Because these mature males live together without the usual aggression, visitors are provided with a rare opportunity to observe complex male social bonding.
Predictability and Trekking Conditions
Historically, the Nyakagezi family was known for its nomadic behavior, frequently crossing borders into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, since 2012, the group has permanently settled in Uganda. Their preference for the lower altitudes and bamboo zones of Mgahinga means that treks are often shorter and less strenuous than those in the steeper sectors of Bwindi.
In addition to the easier terrain, the open volcanic landscape provides excellent sightlines; therefore, neat viewing angles and clear photography are more easily achieved. This consistency contributes to a success rate of over 95% for sightings.

The Mgahinga Experience
Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park, yet it offers a high-quality, intimate experience. With only one habituated group, only 8 permits are issued per day, ensuring that your encounter feels exclusive and unhurried.
Note: Because the Nyakagezi group is the only one in the park, permits can sell out months in advance during the dry seasons. Early booking is essential to secure your spot in this unique volcanic landscape.
