How Far in Advance You Should Book Gorilla Permits

gorilla trekking permit

One of the most frequently asked questions about gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is how far in advance to book a gorilla permit. Because these permits are limited, controlled, and highly competitive—especially during peak travel months—early planning is crucial. Gorilla safaris in Uganda and Rwanda attract thousands of visitors each year, yet each gorilla family can only be visited by eight trekkers per day. This limited access protects the gorillas but also means travelers must secure their spots early.

If you plan to trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the most recommended booking window is 6 to 12 months before your intended trek date. Bwindi has four trekking sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo—and each has different numbers of gorilla families. Buhoma, being the oldest and most accessible sector, sells out fastest. Travelers seeking premium lodges or specific gorilla families must book toward the 12-month mark to avoid disappointment.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one habituated gorilla group, the Nyakagezi family. Because this family is highly popular due to its stable composition and dramatic volcanic scenery, permits for Mgahinga sell out quickly. Booking at least 6 months in advance is ideal, especially for high season months.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park typically requires even earlier reservations due to limited permits and high demand. Rwanda attracts luxury travelers, short-stay safari guests, and conference visitors who extend trips for gorilla trekking. For this reason, the ideal booking window is 8 to 12 months, especially from June to September when East Africa experiences peak safari tourism.

Travelers visiting during off-peak seasons (March–May or October–November) may find availability with shorter notice, but relying on this is never recommended. Uganda occasionally offers last-minute availability in Rushaga Sector due to its high number of gorilla families, but planning ahead is always safer.

Booking early not only guarantees availability but also ensures you secure accommodation nearest to your trekking sector. Bwindi’s sectors are spread out, and trekking in a sector far from your lodge can mean waking up at 4 AM and driving long distances over rough roads. Early booking ensures your itinerary is well-coordinated with optimal lodge placements.

In summary, the best approach is to book 6–12 months in advance, with priority given to travellers with fixed schedules, large groups, family trips, or luxury itineraries. Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is too precious to leave to chance, and early permit booking ensures your adventure unfolds smoothly from start to finish.
